FLAPPERS:

No decade in recent history has seen as much change in the status and style of women as the 1920s, sometimes called the Roaring Twenties or the Era of Wonderful Nonsense. Here rose the Flapper! The term flapper originated in Great Britain, where there was a short fad among young women to wear rubber galoshes left open to flap when they walked. The name stuck, and throughout the US and Europe, "Flapper" was the name given to liberated young women.
Flappers were bold, confident and sexy. The Flapper dress, purposely shaped to hide womanly curves, was boxy and hung straight from shoulder to knee, with no waistline allowing much more freedom of movement than women's fashions before the 1920's. While it did not show breasts or hips, it did show a lot of leg, and the just below-the-knee length that horrified many of the older generation!
Other defining accessorizing looks include beads, sequins, lace, fringes, chiffon, satin, flowers, shiny and shimmery fabric, uneven hemlines, and peter pan collars. Throw away your pushup bra for this look, you want a flat chest or uni-bust look and no cleavage! Let your decolletage be the star of the show instead!

SHOES:
This is perhaps the hardest thing to get right but, if you do, it will complete the look for you. Stilettos had not yet been invented in the 1920's. Wearing them will spoil the look. But if that all you have, then try to wear heels that have a round closed toe and a t-bar strap or buckle.

HAT and HEADBANDS:
If you're going to recreate the 1920's flapper look you need to get a hat or headband. Headbands are also a great and easy way to recreate the look. If you have a thin scarf or satin belt, tie it around your head just above your browline and knot it at the back or tuck in. Add a feather if you like, and your done! Also, there are many beaded and sparkly headbands around today that you can slip over your hair that would look great.
The cloche hat is the one to get the detail right. However, a wide-brimmed hat that comes down over your brow-line should look the part.
A close-fitting beaded/crocheted skull-cap will also look authentic. It should fit like a swimming cap and cover your skull down to the nape of the neck. The great thing about finding a hat or cap that works is that you don't have to worry about getting the right hairstyle, just pin your hair back or hide it all under all that hat.

GANGSTERS:

Here, too, fashions took an impressive twist from the Edwardian period. New generation of men wore baggy plus fours and wide legged trousers (commonly known as "Oxford Bags"). The 20's introduced double breasted vests as well, worn underneath the single breasted jacket.   Pinstripe was a popular choice of pattern. Suspenders were extremely popular at the time and were often paired with knickers and a white of light-blue dress shirt.

Add a Fedora hat, wide ties (white on black shirt looks fine!) and shoes in contrasting color. Wear a carnation in the lapel and your hair slicked back for a finished look! You may also consider bringing a cheap cigar to clamp between your teeth and a Tommy gun or a handgun in a holster.
